Lawyer arrested on suspicion of stealing

A Placer County attorney who represented a Grass Valley couple in a car crash suit was arrested this week on suspicion of stealing money from them and another client, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office reported.

James C. Harvey of Newcastle was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of grand theft in the Grass Valley case, Placer County Sheriff Capt. Rick Armstrong said. Harvey is also suspected of stealing $60,000 from an Auburn woman, Armstrong said.

Armstrong declined to release the names of the alleged victims.

Harvey, 50, was released from the Placer County Jail Tuesday after posting $3,000 bail, Armstrong said. Arraignment has been tentatively set for Aug. 15.

Charges have not yet been filed, Dan Gong, Placer County’s chief deputy district attorney, said Wednesday.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Harvey is suspected of using some of the $50,000 awarded the Grass Valley couple in March 1999 for his personal gain.

Harvey is also suspected of cashing two $30,000 checks from a 2001 court settlement that were supposed to go to an Auburn woman he was representing, the Sheriff’s Office claims.

A spokeswoman for the State Bar of California declined comment.

“Any investigation of an attorney is considered confidential until the State Bar files a notice of charges with the State Bar Court,” spokeswoman Kathleen Beitiks said Wednesday.
