Kids were on roof of SUV going 50 mph

A Nevada County man who allegedly drove his SUV at speeds reaching 50 mph with two teens on the roof claimed they were acting as lookouts.

But that explanation didn’t wash with Nevada County sheriff’s deputies, who arrested Patrick James Cassidy, 51, on suspicion of child endangerment, driving under the influence and violating probation.

A sheriff’s deputy saw a blue Chevrolet Suburban drive by with three people on the roof on Birchville Road near Cornflower Court at about 11 p.m. Saturday, said Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.

According to the police report, the Suburban was being driven at speeds up to 50 mph before it was pulled over.

Two 13-year-old boys and a 60-year-old man climbed off the roof, and several other children were inside the Suburban, Royal said.

The driver, identified as Cassidy, told the deputy “he had seen fireworks and was looking for them. The people on the roof were his lookouts,” he said.

During the conversation, the deputy determined Cassidy was intoxicated, Royal said.

Cassidy was booked into county jail and released on $72,362 bail.
