Kids, get ready for summer camp

The College for Kids program at the Sierra College Nevada County Campus will start next month, and registration is in progress.

The two-week summer camp, with a capacity for 60 students per week, is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 16 through 19 and July 23 through 26.

Each week has a separate curriculum based on science, primarily for second- through sixth-graders.

“The first week, the curriculum is called ‘Gizmos, gadgets and goop,'” said Adele Hamlett, program manager of community education at Sierra College. “The children will learn about different types of things related to building devices like an electroscope, a magnetic field detector and a simple circuit.

“The second week, the curriculum is called ‘Mystery of the Pharaoh’s Treasure,’ when the children will solve an Egyptian mystery, unearth various minerals and decipher hieroglyphics. They will also do some tests with minerals,” Hamlett said.

The fee for each week is $179.

Those interested, can register online at or can call the Sierra College community education department at 1 (800) 242-4004, ext. 2590, or 916-781-0590.
