Keri Klein selected as Nevada County’s new public defender

Keri Klein, who has served as the interim public defender for the past several months, has been tapped to fill the position permanently, Nevada County officials said.

Klein, who’s been with the Public Defender’s Office since 2007, learned Thursday of her promotion.

“You know, I’m excited about it,” Klein said. “It’s going to bring an opportunity to bring our office into a best-practices model.”

Klein now will oversee the relocation of her office into the building that houses the county’s Probation Department, above Friar Tuck’s in downtown Nevada City.

Klein said the move, expected early next year, will make it easier for her office’s clients to meet with both attorneys and probation officers. It’ll also put her office in a building compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

County officials say consolidating the two departments will save about $60,000 in rent a year.

“It sort of opens the door to do some innovative practices,” Klein said.

Klein was one of 11 people who applied for the position in the wake of former Public Defender Don Lown’s February retirement.

Her position pays between $129,948 and $158,640.
