After a vehicle crashed into the back of the Nevada City Police Department’s K-9 unit, Officer Scott Goin and his partner, Rudiger, escaped serious injury — but their ride was demolished.

A local welding company owner was more than happy to help get the duo back on the road, however.

Approximately one year ago, the Nevada City Police Department was given a surplus K-9 cage for a Crown Victoria by The Placer County Sheriffs K-9 Unit. The cage was not used, because the department went with a Chevrolet Tahoe for its team. Hours after the accident on Feb. 8, James Lester and Matt Cadman with Lester Enterprises Northstate Inc. went to the Nevada City Police Department to see what they could do to help.

“It was just part of the community support we try to do,” Lester said. “We just wanted to jump in and get it done.”

Sgt. Paul Rohde showed Lester an old Ford Crown Victoria that the department rarely used, and the surplus K-9 cage. The crew at Lester Enterprises Northstate Inc. rose to the challenge and less than 48 hours after the accident, Rudiger had a new ride with the welding company donating its efforts.

“We had to retrofit the cage and get it put into the Crown Vic,” Lester said. “It took two long days to get it done.”
