Jury selection for murder trial may wrap up today

Jury selection will continue today in the murder trial of Lauren Hayes, the 24-year-old accused of killing her ex-boyfriend in 2003.

Potential jurors packed a courtroom at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Nevada County Superior Court to be screened for jury duty in the high-profile murder trial.

The potential jurors were screened for hardship and filled out questionnaires. Hardship may include medical conditions or a job that is difficult to get time away from. The completed questionnaires should be reviewed by attorneys for the prosecution and defense to aid in weeding several more jurors out of the pool today.

Court personnel said a jury may be selected as soon as this afternoon.

If the court does not approve a final jury today, the matter will be continued to 9 a.m. Tuesday.

To move the trial along in a timely fashion, attorneys will begin presenting evidence as soon as the jury is selected.

Attorneys have been allotted 11 days to complete the trial.

Hayes is accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend Lawrence Leffingwell on Sept. 5, 2003.

Leffingwell’s body was found that night, shot in the back of the neck, partially inside his Cadillac at Edward’s Crossing near the Yuba River in Nevada City.
