Jury selection continues

Jury selection will continue today in the trial of Fred Engel, accused of attempting to kill a Nevada City woman while he was allegedly high on methamphetamine.

The jury selection phase of the trial began May 2, after Engel’s attorney Stephen Munkelt failed to secure a change of venue on the basis media coverage would influence a jury’s judgment.

In the days following, more than 200 jurors answered questionnaires, including some who gave Nevada County Judge Robert Tamietti reasons as to why they should be excused from jury duty.

A downstairs courtroom was packed again Tuesday as remaining potential jurors were interviewed by the judge.

So far, Munkelt and Assistant District Attorney Ron Wolfson have each excused two jurors. Both attorneys have the right to excuse 10 jurors, without having to give a reason.

Court staff could not predict when jury selection will be complete, though it is possible – but not probable – a jury will be selected by the end of the week.
