Josh Toft, Bear River Little League

Editor’s note: Josh Toft is a 13-year-old member of the Bear River Little League Giants and the Bear River Majors All-Star team. After hitting 16 home runs in 24 games this season, and helping the Giants to the Area 2 Tournament of Champions title, Toft shared his thoughts on one of his favorite sports.

What’s your favorite memory on a baseball diamond?

Probably when I hit my first grand slam. That was last year. We were over in Penn Valley. It was a pretty close game – still in the early innings – so it was a big one.

What’s it like to play in a championship game that goes extra innings, like last week’s Area 2 title game?

I knew we just needed to score some more runs. I was trying to get my team excited and was trying to get them off the bench. I was nervous. It was a tough game, but we kept it going and came back to win.

What’s it like to be intentionally walked four times, like in last week’s title game?

It’s happened to me a couple of times before that, so I’m kind of used to it. It’s hard, because I want to hit. But I try to make up for it by running the bases hard.

Who’s your favorite pro baseball player and why?

Barry Bonds. I’ve just grown up being a Giants fan and I’m always watching him. I don’t really follow (the steroids controversy) too well. I hope he doesn’t really do that. And I hope he doesn’t get in trouble. I hope he gets the (all-time home run) record.

What do you like to do when you’re not playing baseball?

I like to play other sports. I play basketball and soccer. And I run track and play volleyball. My favorite used to be soccer, but I’d have to say basketball is my favorite now.
