A jogger passing a home on the 16,000 block of Pasquale Road in Cascade Shores, used some quick thinking to extinguish a small fire with a bucket of water after smelling smoke coming from the back of the structure.

The fire was confined to the porch.

The call came in as a residential structure fire at around 2:45 p.m. Thursday, with units from Cal Fire, Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Nevada County Consolidated Fire responding.

The home was one that was red-tagged and deemed unfit to inhabit after subsidence in the area over the wet winter caused the foundation to shift, according to Grass Valley Battalion Chief Steve Smith.

Nevada County Sheriff’s officers searched for the responsible party but were unsuccessful.

Neighbors in the area requested extra patrols for potential squatters starting fires in the area.
