Invitations to veterans lunch determined by space limits

My letter that ran in The Union on Oct. 25 regarding an appreciation luncheon given by the Bear River Lioness club failed to explain the reason all veterans were not invited to this free event.

The primary reason our club is specifically honoring veterans of World War I, World War II and the Korean conflict this year is the seating capacity of our building. Space is very limited, as my letter indicated.

Veterans of World War II are dying at a rate of 3,000 per day. Last year our luncheon only honored veterans from this war as we had no idea what kind of response we would have; 39 veterans attended (lunch was free for their spouse or caregiver, also).

Sadly, three of the 39 veterans have since passed away. Our club members realized we could honor more this year, so we decided to extend our invitation to veterans of the Korean conflict, as they are now in their 70s and 80s.

The reason our club is sponsoring this free luncheon is to honor and thank our aging veterans. We have not forgotten the sacrifices they made more than 50 years ago, and we wanted them to know this.

It was never our intent to insult or slight veterans from other eras by specifically excluding them. I want to extend my heartfelt apology if offense was taken by any veterans or their family members.

I often wonder what kind of world this would be if it weren’t for our veterans. Furthermore, would any of us even be alive if it weren’t for the sacrifices they’ve made when duty called?

I value and applaud all veterans. Thank you for your service to your country.
