Interim county executive shares Gaebler’s philosophy

Taking over the county’s administrative helm next month will be Rick Haffey.

Nevada County supervisors voted Friday to appoint Haffey as interim county executive officer on Jan. 3, replacing Ted Gaebler, the county executive officer.

The 49-year-old Haffey was named Nevada County as assistant county executive officer in 2000. He was second in command of the county’s administrative duties, working closely with Gaebler.

“I’ve been fortunate to have worked for Ted Gaebler,” said Haffey. “He and I have the same philosophy of government, we just have two different styles. We worked well as a team.”

Haffey previously worked for 10 years for the city of Belmont. He was its city manager from November 1991 to August 1993.

One of Haffey’s biggest career challenges was when he was named Belmont’s interim police chief for several months. During that appointment, he worked to gain the trust of its police force despite a lack of police experience and objections from the police union.

Haffey said his two biggest challenges now will be reassuring the county’s 1,000-plus employees that the transition will be OK, and dealing with the state budget deficit’s affects on Nevada County.

Haffey’s first government post was in 1975. He was also a mayor and city council member for the city of South San Francisco.
