Innocent plea

for assault charges

A Grass Valley man facing attempted murder, assault and hate crime charges pleaded innocent Thursday in Nevada County Superior Court.

Frank E. Vargas is due back for a felony conference Oct. 10. He’s being held at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on $250,000 bail.

Vargas’ charges stem from two different cases.

On Sept. 7, he allegedly stabbed a man in the arm after holding him in a head lock and threatening to stab his throat at a Rough and Ready-area home, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

On June 3, according to Grass Valley police, he made racist remarks and threatened a black man who was standing outside his home, and later pepper-sprayed and tried to stab another man.
