Ice skating rink coming to town

Rather than take an hours-long trip to Tahoe to enjoy winter sports, residents can expect a close-to-home addition this winter with the installation of an ice skating rink in Downtown Grass Valley.

“We’ve never done anything like this here before,” said Julia Jordan, Grass Valley Downtown Association executive director. “We just wanted to do something fun, have a minimal cost and have families be able to get together and do something.”

The skating rink will be held from January 18-21 at the Holiday Inn Express on Bank Street in Downtown Grass Valley.

The rink will occupy the 4,000 feet of the event space of the hotel, according to general manager Sean Gilleran.

“I think it’s going to start off as a local attraction, but once people find out about it, I think it’ll be great,” Gilleran said. “I’m really happy with it. It’s a great idea for the town.”

The rink will be decorated and offer a DJ and an area built to look like a snow globe where people can take pictures.

According to Jordan, the optimal feature is that the ice rink will also be eco-friendly.

“The greatest aspect is that it is environmentally friendly and doesn’t require a Zamboni,” Jordan said.

The event is sponsored by several local companies, and if the funding remains the same up until the purchase of the rink, admission will be free with only a $3 charge for the rentals, Jordan said.

Raley’s is one of the companies that sponsored the rink in order to support the community, according to Grass Valley store manager Betsy Perez.

“It’s a great event,” Perez said. “It’s fun and it’s something for the kids and the community to get involved in.”
