Human remains discovered off Lowell Hill Road

Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the discovery of a man’s remains off Lowell Hill Road, near Dutch Flat.

The man’s body was reported Thursday and Placer County Sheriff’s deputies initially were called out to the scene, a remote and rugged area near the border of the two counties, said Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal. When they discovered the remains were in Nevada County, the investigation was turned over to his office, Royal added.

Only partial remains were located, said Nevada County Coroner Paul Schmidt, possibly due to animal depredation. He said the man might need to be positively identified through dental records or DNA.
