House to be torched for training

When plumes of black smoke litter the sky this morning over Loma Rica Drive, don’t pack up your most valuable belongings for a wildfire evacuation or even call 911.

The fire is a controlled burn for training purposes, where firefighters from the Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and the Grass Valley Fire Department will practice their life-saving skills in a burning structure.

“We’re actually going to burn down a house,” said fire department spokeswoman Suzanne Brady.

With dozens of firefighters scheduled to attend, the structure fire will probably be one of the safest spots in Nevada County.

Brady said the live fire training will give firefighters an excellent opportunity to hone their skills.

“All aspects of structural firefighting and safety procedures will be covered in this one day event,” she said.

The firefighters will be tested on search and rescue using a Thermal Imaging Camera and their tactics and strategies in fire suppression.

“That’s how we can see the bodies doing search and rescues,” Brady said of the TIC.

Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies used the same abandoned house for SWAT training Wednesday night.

The fire training will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today on the 14000 block of Loma Rica Drive.
