Hotel construction begins

Construction of a hotel that’s been delayed by legal battles began Thursday.

Earth-moving began for the 68-room, 32,000-square-foot Nevada City Hotel at 375 Hollow Way. The hotel has a projected completion date of April 15, 2003.

“Between today and April 15, the rest is easy,” said Mike Snegg, managing partner of Nevada City Hotel LP, the hotel’s developer.

The hotel was first proposed in 2000, but met with opposition. A group calling itself Friends of Nevada City filed suit in 2000 to block the project, alleging it was improperly approved by Nevada City.

A settlement reached in January paved the way for construction of the project. Under the agreement, the hotel was reduced from 72 to 68 rooms, a strip of land was purchased to screen the view from Highway 49, and the city agreed to consider new rules in its planning process.

“We’ve been committed to building this hotel from the beginning, and now it is happening,” Snegg said.
