Host family needed for Indonesian exchange student

The local chapter of AFS-USA, an international student exchange program, is looking for a Nevada County family to host an Indonesian high school female student for the 2008-09 school year.

The student has received a scholarship and a stipend to cover all school expenses. The host family primarily provides food and housing.

The student qualified to attend high school in the U.S. through the Youth Exchange and Study program created by the U.S. Department of State, said Sandra Rockman, volunteer with AFS-USA.

“Students must enter competitions, pass a rigorous interview process and have excellent grades” to qualify, Rockman said.

The student will attend either Nevada Union High School or Bear River High School, depending on where her host family lives, Rockman added.

If you’re interested in hosting, call Vanessa Smith at 477-6495, or Joey McCutchan at 265-9195. For more information, visit http://www.yesprograms.org.
