Hospital expands breast-imaging service with grant

Pat Donnelly said she’s thrilled to have someone share her duties as the patient care coordinator at the breast imaging center in Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

Donnelly serves about 950 women a year “who have an abnormality (in their mammogram reports) that may or may not result in breast cancer,” she said. But thanks to a $72,849 grant that the hospital received from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a nationwide foundation supporting cancer survivors, support groups and research, Donnelly now has an associate sharing her job.

“A lot of women are in trauma when they’ve been recommended for a biopsy procedure,” Donnelly said. “That’s one of the most critical times for being there to provide support. With two people, we’d be able to serve them better.”

Donnelly helps patients “navigate through the medical system,” she said. “I provide patients educational materials, instructions, follow-ups and recommendations to support groups if needed,” Donnelly said.

The grant also will help Donnelly become a full-time employee at the imaging center.

“You do a lot of listening and be present with them. You are someone they call when they need information.” said Linda Aeschliman, the new part-time assistant.
