Hoop dreams now a reality

Area residents can now play basketball all day long at Pioneer Park.

Three paved basketball courts with painted free-throw and three-point lines will be completed by next week, said Verne Taylor, Nevada City’s public works director. One court already is finished.

The Nevada City Lion’s Club is footing the bulk of the cost of the $23,000 project, paying $18,000 with fundraisers, said Taylor, who also is a club member. The city paid an additional $5,000 to finish the project, he said.

Basketball enthusiasts have parks at Deer Creek and Seven Hills schools where they can shoot, Taylor said. But these courts only are available during evening hours on weekdays and daytime hours on weekends.

The new courts are expected to get plenty of use, said Keith Overbey, president of the Nevada City Lions Club.

Basketball courts are a feature Nevada City has been lacking, Overbey said. Pioneer Park seemed like an ideal location, he said. It’s popular with amenities that include a pool, a band shell and a Little League baseball field.

“Whenever I’m there, there are a lot of people in the park,” Overbey said.

Several businesses and individuals are helping with the project by offering reduced or donated labor and materials, Overbey said.
