Honor our veterans

of war and peace

America has always had brave men and women who put their selfless hearts into combat to protect our freedom.

A nation reveals itself by the patriots it produces, honors and remembers, especially paralyzed, wounded and all combat veterans.

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17. I am a Vietnam-era veteran born during the first year of WWII. I am a member of Potrero Hill’s Russian community in San Francisco. Only English was allowed to be spoken in the house.

Members of my father’s generation were all American-born, all WWII combat veterans. Every home had service stars in the windows.

I was 3 when the war ended. Those veterans came home on crutches and in arm slings. One was blind. Some never came home. I remember hugging my dad for the first time. I remember the great joy experienced by all the families but one, who had a son killed in Germany.

Never honored were the home front veterans – grandparents, parents, wives and siblings; the assembly workers of war materials, warships, warplanes and victory garden; the kids collecting scrap metal. My mom had her Rosie the Riveter badge from Bethlehem Steel.

Families in anguish, fearing the dreaded official government vehicle or telegram – heartbreak!
