Homeowners find middle ground for new forestry building

TRUCKEE – The Tahoe Donner Association has decided against locating a new forestry multi-use facility on open space near the neighborhood, a move officials credited to scrutiny from residents who opposed the idea.

Of four potential sites, three were adjacent to open space land.

“After a more detailed analysis, a number of challenges were identified for the Alder Creek and Ski Slope sites (the three sites on open space land), and management decided to remove them from planning consideration,” said Annie Rosenfeld, director of facilities and risk management.

“Member comments unanimously opposed the use of open space and questioned the expense of the project,” said Kathleen Doler, a homeowner who spearheaded the campaign against the open space sites. “Our ‘Save Tahoe Donner Trails’ group obtained 500 signatures, and around 100 or so Tahoe Donner members sent letters to the board.”

Going forward, Rosenfeld said the Northwoods Boulevard site, off open space land, is still going to be considered; however, it will be a low priority, as other commercially zoned sites inside and outside Tahoe Donner are being evaluated.

“Our objective is to address the facility and operational deficiencies for forestry, maintenance and vehicle maintenance for the long-term, but in balance with the many other identified recreational deficiencies,” Rosenfeld said.
