Home found for Red Cross

The American Red Cross office on Hughes Road will be relocating to Nevada City soon, sharing space with the Workforce Connection rent free, the local chapter’s leader said Wednesday.

The chapter will save $19,200 per year in rent compared to the current location at 144 Hughes Road, said Martha Griese, chief executive of the Three Rivers branch.

Other locations in Grass Valley, including the Senior Center at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, were explored, but no offer came close to Workforce Connection’s rent-free deal, Griese said.

“Everybody charges or they don’t have room,” Griese said.

The move to 117 New Mohawk Road is among several cost-cutting measures being taken due to declining local donations, including a reduction of hours for paid employees and shifting administrative jobs to the main office in Yuba City.

The Red Cross could be out of its Grass Valley office within 30 days, Griese said.
