Holiday Cabaret shuts doors after 23 years

After 23 years of entertaining at the former Holiday Cabaret in Grass Valley, Doug Jensen takes his musical antics to the Gray Goose Bistro and Bar on Alta Sierra Drive off Highway 49.

The new restaurant, formerly Athena’s Greek Cuzina and Scheidels, will feature comfort food and a classic sports bar. Jensen announced the closure of the Holiday Cabaret on June 5.

“It’s really hard to close something you really love,” Jensen said. Jensen has logged 26 years in business between The Iron Door at The Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley and the Holiday Cabaret.

The Gray Goose Bistro and Bar is not related to The Gray Goose gift shop in downtown Nevada City.

Jensen, who has a psychology degree from UC-San Diego, dreamed of being a high school counselor.

“I just fell into the bar business,” Jensen said. “I have loved my business.”

The Holiday Cabaret featured many great acts such as Stephen Stills, Donavan, Al Stewart, The Limeliters, The Kingston Trio and Maria Muldaur and many local bands such as Undrecover and Renegade.

Jensen also prides himself on the signature cabaret and karaoke show he performed with his parents and partners, John and Miriam Kartozian for many years.

“People still ask about the Cabaret from the ’80s,” Jensen said. “I have run the longest running karaoke show in Nevada County for 12 years and have met many a fine singer.”

Jensen’s father, John Kartozian, added: “He wants to look forward to a successful operation.”
