Highway fatality identified

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office released Monday the name of the Grass Valley man who was killed in a Saturday wreck on Highway 49, near Alta Sierra.

Arthur Robert Thomas, 60, died at the scene of the crash. He was a passenger in a 2003 Ford pickup, driven by 58-year-old Grass Valley resident David Fleuti. Fleuti was driving north.

Driving a 1983 Ford pickup in the opposite direction was 73-year-old Oroville resident Paul Schmoyer.

The crash occurred at about 7:15 a.m. near Round Valley Road, when a group of deer ran across the highway, and traffic came to a sudden stop, according to authorities. Schmoyer pressed down his brakes and swerved left across the double-yellow line into the path of Fleuti’s truck.

Fleuti’s truck flipped and landed on its roof in an embankment. Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene. Fleuti was treated and released from Sierra Nevada Memorial. Schmoyer’s truck came to rest on its wheels and down an embankment. He was also treated and released at Sierra Nevada Memorial.
