Highway 49 closed as authorities detonate old dynamite

Highway 49 was closed between Oak Tree and Sweetland roads on the San Juan Ridge Friday evening as authorites detonate old sticks of dynamite found in a bunker.

Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal said the sticks of dynamite were found in gallon-sized glass jars by Camptonville resident Roger Elam, who was combing through a home once owned by his deceased parents on the 29600 block of Highway 49.

The Placer County bomb squad was called to help remove the old dynamite.

No injuries were reported, and no evacuations were planned authorities said.
