High school district accepting applications for vacant board seat
The Nevada Joint Union High School District board of trustees is accepting applications to fill the vacancy for the school board’s Trustee Area 5 seat.
No candidates filed to run for the vacant seat by the Aug. 8 deadline, including board member Wayne Klauer, who currently holds the seat on the board.
“We will be introducing a process and time line at our Sept. 10 board meeting for a replacement for our vacancy in Trustee Area 5,” District Superintendent Louise Johnson said. “Under the education code, the board will be taking applications for that seat and making a selection prior to the Nov. 4 election day.”
According to the district map, the vacant seat encompasses South Nevada County, bordered by the Bear River and Placer County lines. Applicants interested in the seat must be at least 18 years old, have not been convicted of a felony, and live within the boundaries of the trustee area. The procedures for filling the vacancy are the same as for a provisional appointment.
“We will ask for applications, and then the applicants can send in their applications to the board,” Johnson said. “Myself, with a subcommittee of the board, will verify the applications that they are indeed qualified to be on the board, in that seat. There will be an interview with the candidates and the full board, and we’re looking at doing that at a special board meeting sometime in October.”
Current board members will review all of the applicants, and then come to a decision together to make an appointment through a roll call vote on Oct. 8. Johnson said the chosen trustee will take a seat with the board at the organizational meeting in December, just as any newly elected board members would.
Currently held by board member Georgie Coulter, Trustee Area 2 is the only NJUHSD board seat on the November ballot, and is an uncontested race.
The district office will officially post a public notice for applications to fill the vacant seat on Sept. 11. Applicants have until Sept. 26 to turn in all necessary application items to the board. The term for the district’s appointment will end in November 2018.
