High lights

Area firefighters combined required training on high ladders with civic service Tuesday when they rode their equipment to hang energy-efficient LED lights on Mill Street buildings Tuesday.

“While they’re not doing calls, they’re working on ladder training,” Grass Valley Downtown Association Executive Director Howard Levine explained. And every few years, the firefighters like to re-acquaint themselves with the maze-like rooftops of the historic downtown, just in case they have to put out a fire there, Levine added.

The strings of 3,000 lights being put up this week are among 8,000 purchased last year through a grant from Mother Lode Energy and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. and cost about $3,000, Levine said. The first 5,000 lights went up last year, with help from Grass Valley’s Explorer Scout Troop 1300.

The lights replace energy-wasteful strings that were 15 years old and becoming cracked and fire-prone from exposure to the sun, Levine said.

The ladder training came in handy for firefighter Matt Lichenstein, with Nevada County Consolidated Fire Protection District. He had never been up on the fire ladders, he said.

Installation of the new light should be completed in time for the Thanksgiving weekend a month from now, Levine said.
