Have some laughs and dare to be bold

“Go at it boldly, and you’ll find unexpected forces closing round you and coming to your aid.”

Canadian author and pastor Basil King offered this advice when he spoke about overcoming fear.

I thought about this Saturday as I (as one of three judges) watched a group of comedians take the stage in Grass Valley, one by one, to perform in the San Francisco International Stand-Up Comedy Competition. It was one stop on a long tour – all for the honor of being among an impressive list of past winners, including Robin Williams and Dana Carvey.

I tend to judge a little high — just for that “being bold” part. (They were calling me the Paula Abdul of the panel.) So I cringed slightly… not because of the Paula Abdul thing… but when the sound of crickets was evident once or twice during a performance. When it happened, though, the comedian just laughed it off and moved on. (Brave.) Which, in turn, made the audience laugh.

I’m still laughing and plan to be front and center when they come back next year.

Thankfully, it was a sunny weekend – for the most part.

The Auburn Community Golf Classic was held Friday at the Auburn Valley Country Club. One of many highlights of the day was Randall Dawson, national long-drive champion, who wowed everyone on the course.

The Union’s Jacki Webber and I enjoyed an evening with our fun and friendly neighbors to the south. The event was to raise funds for the Auburn Symphony (www.auburnsymphony.com) and the Auburn Chamber of Commerce (www.auburnchamber.net). All are welcome to participate in this event. For more information, call the Auburn Chamber at (530) 885-5616.

The Italian Festa was a busy place with entertainment, crafters, food and libations. (I heard the cannolis from Christopher’s Old World Deli were delicious, and many who tried them encouraged Christopher to share his recipe with The Union readers. We’ll see.) So “hats off” to the folks who organized this festival. Well done!
