Harris wants to make Nevada City self-sufficient

Nevada City Interim Councilwoman Sally Harris will use her time on the council to concentrate on transportation issues after being appointed to the seat she has been filling on an interim basis.

She would like to continue working to preserve the city’s historic downtown and work to update the city’s housing element. She also wants to make the city more self-sufficient.

“I want to really, thoroughly discuss that and get more public input on that,” Harris said. “I am excited to be working with the new council members.”

Harris won’t have to appear on the November ballot.

Her term had ended after the June primary saw three people elected to three open seats. But council members appointed Harris in July to temporarily fill the seat left vacant when Councilwoman Sheila Stein resigned and moved to England.

Then Harris decided to run for the seat in the November special election. She faces no opposition, and the filing deadline for the race has passed. City Council members late Wednesday approved a resolution from City Manager Gene Albaugh that will allow her to serve without appearing on the ballot.

Harris, 54, is a retired financial professional who has previously served as The Union’s business manager. She is a native of Portland, Ore.
