Halloween magic: Little lambs, tiny witches haunt downtown Grass Valley

Parents, grandparents, and friends took their little ones around to stores on Mill and Main streets in downtown Grass Valley for the annual Safe Trick or Treat event.

Merchants dressed in costume handed out sweets and treats, while several social service organizations and agencies handed out free books to encourage parents to read to their children.

The Grass Valley Fire Department had its new ladder truck on display, and the Grass Valley Library/Royce Branch offered a puppet show, “Frankenswine.”

Winners of the Great Goblin Halloween window display and costume contest in downtown Grass Valley were:

• Best Halloween window: Foothill Flowers

• Most enthusiastic: Wells Fargo Insurance

• Best costumed business: Aimee Taylor Handcrafted

• Best costume theme: Tess’ Kitchen Store

• Most child-pleasing: Grass Valley City Hall

• Best overall: Citizen’s Bank on Neal Street

Judges this year were Executive Director Mary Ann Mueller of the Grass Valley/Nevada County Chamber of Commerce and volunteer Judy Bagley.

Sponsors of Safe Trick or Treat, organized by the Grass Valley Downtown Association, are The Union, First 5 of Nevada County, Nevada County Drug Free Coalition and KNCO Radio.
