Groups gather to find homes for pets

Saturday’s Adoptathon at the Nevada County Animal Shelter promises to be a fun-filled afternoon with several other animal groups also participating.

Shelter volunteer coordinator Cheryl Wicks said that in addition to about 20 cats and 20 dogs up for adoption at the shelter, other animals will be available.

“We have AnimalSave participating, as well as Tiny Paws Rescue and Chow Chow Rescue, among others,” Wicks said. “There are lots of adorable animals in need of homes.”

The Adoptaton begins at noon and ends at 3 p.m. at the shelter, 14647 McCourtney Road, next to the Transfer Station. There will be food available – a bake sale – and entertainment.

This is the third annual Adoptathon in Nevada County. Wicks said it began when the North Shore Animal League in New York challenged all other animal rescue groups to participate. Adoptathons are now held the first weekend in May in all 50 states and 23 foreign countries. More than 1 million animals have been adopted as a result of Adoptathons.

Animals will be able to be taken home immediately after being adopted Saturday, Wicks said.

Proceeds from the Adoptathon will go to Sammies Friends, a nonprofit that pays for veterinary care for shelter animals. For more information, please call the shelter at 272-8833.
