Goodman arrested at Republican National Convention

Journalist Amy Goodman, whose syndicated column appears weekly in The Union, was arrested late Monday afternoon outside the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., according to a report on her Web site, http://www.democracynow.org.

The Web site carries video of her arrest at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYjyvkR0bGQ.

In the video, Goodman appears to be asking to speak to police, dressed in heavy riot gear. After asking her to step out of the street and back onto the curb, the officer she is addressing suddenly grabs her and arrests her.

According to a report on Goodman’s Web site, “Goodman was arrested while attempting to free two Democracy Now! producers who were being unlawfuly detained. They are Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar. Kouddous and Salazar were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention. …

“Ramsey County Sherrif Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were being arrested on suspicion of rioting. They are currently being held at the Ramsey County jail in St. Paul.”

Other officials at Goodman’s daily television and radio program condemned the arrest as a violation of freedom of the press, protected by the U.S. Constitution.

Goodman’s show also is aired at 7 p.m. Monday through Friday on KVMR in Nevada City.
