Gettin’ jiggy

All week long, about 240 people have been fiddling, dancing and singing at Alasdair Fraser’s Sierra Fiddle Camp.

Today they will share what they have learned about jigs, reels and folk music from around the world in their Fiddlers at the Fairgrounds PIcnic Concert, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Fraser is a native of Scotland and resident of the San Juan Ridge who started the fiddle camp three years ago.

“He’s excited about a movement welling up in western Nevada County around fiddling,” said local musician Peter Wilson. “The Nevada City School of the Arts has developed a fiddle program with local fiddler Ethan Lewis instructing. Ethan learned his chops at Alasdair’s Valley of the Moon School of Scottish Fiddling. He’s been a part of the Sierra Fiddle Camp from it’s beginning.

“As a result, quite a few young local fiddlers are camp attendees,” Wilson added.

Among the concert’s featured performers is fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel.

Tickets are $18 in advance at Yabobo in Nevada City, BriarPatch and The Book Seller in Grass Valley, Cherry Records in Auburn, by phone at (800) 838-3006 and online at http://www.sierrafiddlecamp.org; $20 at the gate; $5 children, 12 and under.
