Gasoline prices inching upward

Since the start of the new year, consumers have seen prices inch up at gas pumps around California, with forecasts of additional increases ahead.

The cost for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline around Grass Valley went up an average of 4 cents, to $1.58. In Northern California, drivers pay an average of $1.70 – an increase of 3 cents from December, according to the monthly survey by AAA of Northern California, released Tuesday.

Sustained high prices of crude oil is a major reason for the rise in gasoline costs, said AAA spokeswoman Jenny Mack.

Mack predicted the price at the pump will continue to increase in the coming weeks, based on historic figures.

“In addition to the high price of oil, prices typically rise between January to February as California’s refineries begin to prepare for the switch over to the summer blend of fuel,” she said.

San Francisco motorists are paying the highest cost per gallon in the northern California region, at an average of $1.85.
