Gasoline prices fall yet again

Gas prices continued their tumble in the past month, falling an average of 11 cents a gallon in Northern California, according to an American Automobile Association survey released Tuesday.

In Grass Valley, seven gas stations averaged $1.23 a gallon for the period ending Tuesday, down from $1.25 a month ago.

The $1.27 a gallon reported by AAA in Northern California is the lowest price since March 1999. It may also be the lowest price motorists will see this year, as increases have started to show up in some areas.

“It’s likely to be the lowest level we’ll see this year,” said AAA spokeswoman Bronwyn Hogan. “In the past month, they bottomed out, so we’re on the upswing now.”

The cheapest Northern California gas is in Fresno, which averaged $1.05 a gallon. Prices in Marysville averaged $1.18, while Sacramento was $1.24. Statewide gas prices were $1.22 a gallon.

Prices fell because of an economic downturn, a decline in tourism and a glut of gas from unused jet fuel converted to motor vehicle fuel.

But California refineries have cut production, and OPEC has agreed to remove 2 million barrels per day from the world’s oil supply.

That, combined with a seasonal spring increase in driving – when tourism picks up – means prices are likely to go up, said Hogan.
