Gas prices keep on rising

George Boardman

Gasoline prices in western Nevada County are at a record high, but they are below what other California motorists are paying.

The statewide average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded is now $2.31, up 44 cents a gallon from $1.87 a year ago, according to a report Tuesday from AAA of Northern California.

A spot check of gasoline prices in western Nevada County on Tuesday by The Union showed a range of $2.23 (Flyers, Arco) to $2.29 (Shell and Chevron on East Main Street) for a gallon of unleaded.

“We’re concerned about the impact on people who are struggling to pay their bills,” said Sean Comey, a spokesman for AAA. “These prices can make it very difficult for some families to balance their budgets.”

The statewide average price is up 10 cents a gallon since AAA’s last survey April 13. The lowest price in Northern California cities tracked by AAA is in Tracy, at $2.21 a gallon. The average price in Northern California is $2.29 a gallon.

Several factors are contributing to the increase in consumer prices. Worldwide demand for oil is increasing, and unstable political conditions in the Middle East are forcing up futures prices. Meanwhile, the United States is entering the heavy summer driving season.
