Gas prices down in area

Gasoline prices in western Nevada County have dropped slightly from the record highs set in May, reflecting a statewide trend that is bringing some relief to motorists.

AAA of Northern California reported Tuesday that the average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in northern California is $2.32, a 5-cent drop from the record high last month but still higher than prices in the Grass Valley area.

A survey by The Union in the Grass Valley area Tuesday showed prices down at four stations, up at one, and unchanged at two others from May. Prices ranged from $2.20 at Arco to $2.30 at the Shell station on East Main Street.

“It’s a trend in the right direction,” said Sean Comey, spokesman for AAA. “We’ve still got a long way to go before anyone filling up their tank will say, ‘Finally things are back to normal,’ but at least we’re not setting a new record high every day.”

The lowest price AAA found in Northern California was in Santa Rosa, where gas averaged $2.24 a gallon. The most expensive gas was reported in Yreka, where the average price is $2.44 a gallon.

The statewide average is $2.32 a gallon, compared to a national average of $1.98 a gallon.
