Funding for Combie, bridge-widening eyed

Funding to widen Highway 49 from the Bear River bridge to Combie Road will go before the state Transportation Commission next week.

The commission is expected to review $10 million in funding for the road widening project during its May 7-8 meeting, said Caltrans spokesman Mark Dinger.

If approved, the project could start as early as September, with final completion in winter 2004, said Dinger.

The project’s start date was pushed back from July or August until September, according to the Nevada County Transportation Committee newsletter.

The project was delayed over a wetlands permit dispute with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Dinger said the Corps requires a new permit to replace the current one. An application is expected to be submitted by the end of this week.

The project would widen a 2.7-mile section of Highway 49 from two to four lanes, including the Bear River bridge. The intersection of Combie Road and Highway 49 would be widened, with lanes added for northbound through traffic and left turns. Construction that disrupts traffic flow would be done at night.

Dinger said the Combie Road-Highway 49 intersection is a bottleneck for commute traffic, especially in the afternoon.

“We’re trying to alleviate traffic congestion in that area,” said Dinger.
