Fund created after man’s home burns

The brother of a man who lost everything in a house fire is setting up a fund for his sibling.

David Sargent – whose brother, Scott Sargent, 40, was burned out of his Holyrood Drive caretaker’s bungalow Feb. 6 – said it is not easy to ask for help, since the brothers have been self-sufficient ever since they were in their teens, and have taken care of each other over the years.

“I’ve never had to ask for anything like this in my life,” said David Sargent. “We’ve always been pretty self-sufficient.”

But after injuring his neck a few months back, he’s finding it tough. “We take care of each other, I just can’t afford to do it right now,” said David Sargent.

Scott Sargent came back to his home of 11 years to find it reduced to rubble last week. He recovered a couple of rings, and also found his cat had escaped injury.

David said his brother is now staying in a recreational vehicle, looking for another job, and trying to get his car on the road. His brother is hanging in there, he said, but wakes up at night remembering something else he has lost.

The “Scott Sargent Fire Fund” has been set up at Citizens Bank of Nevada County to help Sargent. Checks can be dropped off to any Citizens Bank branch or mailed in care of Citizens Bank of Nevada County, 709A Sutton Way, Grass Valley, CA 95945.
