Four talented locals take home Ellys

Four Nevada County residents active in community theater received Elly Awards in the young people’s category Sunday at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento. Catherine Ione, Harry Kawa, Mila Johansen and Diane Fetterly were among the 58 winners taking home Ellys.

Ione won in the costume design category for the Nevada County Performing Arts Guild’s “Narnia.” Kawa won in lighting design for the Performing Art Guild’s “The Little Mermaid.”Johansen won in set design for “The Little Mermaid.” Fetterly won in supporting actor (adult female) for Garbeau’s Acorn & Oak Theatre’s “Cinderella.”

More than 180 productions from 60 theaters and production companies within a 12-county area competed in this year’s 20th annual Elly Awards competition. About 300 nominees from community theaters in the Sacramento area were named.

The Elly Awards competition celebrates excellence in Sacramento-area regional community theaters. The awards are named after Eleanore McClatchy, former president of McClatchy Newspapers. McClatchy, a theater patron, was a strong advocate of the performing arts in the Sacramento region.

Sponsoring the awards is the nonprofit Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance, which promotes high-quality theater in the Sacramento area and neighboring regions.
