Former Grass Valley man dies in Oakland

A 23-year-old former Grass Valley resident apparently died after being struck by a car early Sunday near the Bay Bridge in Oakland.

A California Highway Patrol dispatcher said Shawn Jechura was walking on or near Sterling Street when he was struck by a silver Nissan. The CHP received a call around 4:40 a.m. Sunday that reported a pedestrian had been struck in that location. Jechura was living in Oakland at the time of his death.

According to a CHP dispatcher, an arrest has been made in the case and the Nissan impounded. No charges have been filed yet, but the suspect, whose name was not released, is being held at the San Francisco County Jail.
