Former fire engineer files to run for seat on Consolidated board

Spencer W. Garrett Jr., a retired Nevada County Consolidated Fire Engineer, has filed to run for the unexpired two-year term of Consolidated fire board member Ron Pennington, who is resigning, in the Nov. 4 general elections.

Garrett, 59, a 21-year firefighter at Consolidated, served as a firefighters’ union shop steward about 12 years ago and was a firefighter with the former Bullion Volunteer Fire Department. Bullion was absorbed in a merger with Consolidated some years ago.

“I have an extremely good knowledge of where the guys are and where they have been,” said Garrett, whose name was posted later by the Nevada County Elections Office, sometime after the office sent out its unofficial listings late Friday and which were published in The Union on Saturday.

Pennington, a longtime board member, has sold his home and is moving to Chico, according to fellow Consolidated fire board member David Hanson.

“I think he will be officially resigning at the meeting on Thursday,” Hanson said.

Garrett, who also has budgeting experience from previously running an electronics business, said he supports the concept of a single fire department for Nevada County because he said it would eliminate duplication and make the service levels more consistent from area to area.

“There are too many redundancies,” he said. “Some of the fire departments are too small to offer the required level of service.”

He said all county taxpayers deserve equal service. He said having one overall fire department was the best way to go.

“Everybody’s paying taxes and should get the same service,” he said.

Garrett retired from Consolidated on Jan. 20, 2013.

Fridays listings from the county elections office only included incumbent Consolidated board members Hanson, Keith Grueneberg and Mark Bass.

Additional listings not included in Saturday’s article in The Union include:

Oak Tree Community Park and Recreation District: Richard Travers; Western Gateway Recreation and Park District: James S. Driver; Beyers Lane Community Service District: Bob Williams, Jane Williams, Heino Nicolai; Lake of the Pines Ranchos Community Service District: Dan Fitzgerald, Benton Seeley, Bob Jones, Robert Runne, Glen Fuller; Mystic Mind Road Community Service District: Joyce Warfield, Gary Baker; Sierra Joint Community College District, area 2: David Ferrari; Sierra Joint Community College District, area 6: Nancy Palmer.
