Forest improvement $ coming Nov. 5

Fire safety and infrastructure projects are expected to be awarded more than $390,000 in federal funding from a Tahoe National Forest Committee in coming weeks.

The Forest Service’s Nevada/Placer County Resource Advisory Committee is set to award the funds on Nov. 5.

This time around, the RAC committee is expected to award about $5,000 in funding to a scotch broom eradication project overseen by the Nevada County Fire Safe Council.

The money comes from National Forest Service revenues raised in the Tahoe National Forest.

Of the $390,000-plus remaining in the fund, $61,000 is available specifically for Nevada County projects, according to Forest Service. About $39,000 in funding was awarded in Nevada County after the RAC met in August.

County Supervisor Hank Weston sits on the committee.

RAC money is meant to fund forest improvement and infrastructure projects throughout the Tahoe National Forest, such as better roads and fire fuels reduction efforts.

In August, the committee approved a fuels reduction project along Highway 20 east of Nevada City, and upgrades at the Grouse Ridge Lookout in eastern Nevada County. Forest Service officials hope to redesign the historic lookout, built in the 1920s, to rent to tourists.
