FOR THE PUBLIC: Margaret Meagher, Nevada City

My job title: Program coordinator for HelpLine Information and Assistance.

What I do in my job: Provide referrals and assistance to callers who need help, but don’t know which of the many social and human service agencies to call.

Why my job is important to the public: HelpLine is the entry point to the network of social and human service agencies in Nevada County. If people don’t know where to find help, they won’t be able to receive the services that they need.

The special skills and talents I bring to my job: A good memory and the ability to work well with other people.

The best part of my job is when: The person you have talked to on the phone is really helped by the information you have given. After the conversation, they feel there is hope.

The part of my job that I like least is: Being unable to accomplish all that I think should be done.

A day of work I’ll always remember was …: The day HelpLine, along with the Nevada County Children and Families First Commission and the Nevada County Long Term Care Integration Project, finally chose new software for our database of referral information.

How I got my job: Saw it advertised in The Union classifieds.

How long I’ve been working here: 21/2 years.

My dream job would be: A novelist.

My family: My husband, Jim; and sons Kevin, Tom and John.

My hobbies: Hiking, reading and volunteering.

When I was a kid, I …: loved going camping.

If money were no object, I would: Support the many nonprofit organizations in Nevada County that do so much to help people.

My dream vacation: A quiet lake in the high Sierra.

If a movie were made of my life, I would be played by: Lorraine Bracco.

The people who have made the biggest difference in my life: My husband, Jim, and my friends Lorraine Plagge and John Halverson.

My hero: Jane Austen.

The best book I’ve read lately was (and why) … “The Age of Gold” by H.W. Brands. A very well-written book that argues that the California Gold Rush had a much larger role in shaping American history than is generally assumed.

The soundtrack to my life would include these songs: “I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends” by the Beatles and “California” by John Mayall.

I like living in Nevada County because … : The beautiful forests and mountains, the strong sense of history and the wonderful people.

“For the Public” appears each Wednesday. To suggest a public servant to be profiled, call The Union newsroom at 273-9561.
