FOR THE PUBLIC: J.P. Tindell, Grass Valley
My job title: Senior Planner/Recreation, Nevada County.
What I do in my job: Help Nevada County expand its recreation and park facilities and services – especially for unincorporated county residents – right now by planning for trails, facilitating the formation of new recreation and park districts, and guiding the expenditure of county recreation fees and grants.
Why my job is important to the public: Every community with a high quality of life such as we enjoy here and a healthy society has places for everyone to be active and recreate, both indoors and out.
The special skills and talents I bring to my job: Dedication to a life of service, many years of experience as a recreation and park planner, and a passion for the outdoors.
The best part of my job is when: I know I am contributing to providing people with access to the natural world and opportunities to recreate themselves.
The part of my job that I like least is: Hearing the frustrations of the many advocates for recreation areas and parks in our county, whose efforts over many years have not always produced tangible results.
A day of work I’ll always remember was …. : When I was awarded the county’s Creative Employee of the Year award a few months ago. It was very gratifying to have my contributions recognized by my co-workers and superiors, and to know that creativity in a government setting is valued. Our county employees are really great people!
How I got my job: I moved to Nevada County for a change of lifestyle after living many years in the Bay Area. This coincided with the Board of Supervisors approving funding for a new position. While looking where to put my skills and passion to work in service to others, I found my experience perfectly matched what was needed for the job.
How long I’ve been working here: Two 1/2 years.
My dream job would be: One where I could spend most of my time outdoors in the Sierra Nevada.
My family: My parents, a brother and sister, nieces and nephews all live in western New York state, where I was born and raised. I also have a terrific sweetheart here.
My hobbies: Being out in nature, reading, music, dancing and creating art.
When I was a kid, I …: Was a tomboy who spent as much time as I could outdoors and learning new things.
If money were no object, I would: Continue to live here and work only when I felt like it, doing what brings me the greatest joy.
My dream vacation: A year-long tour of all the national parks in Canada and the U.S.
If a movie were made of my life, I would be played by: Susan Sarandon. She’s a very classy woman, and many people generously say I remind them of her.
The people who have made the biggest difference in my life: Many of my co-workers and friends over the years. I have been well loved by many kind and wonderful people.
My hero: The Dalai Lama. I completely admire his dedication to peace, humility, compassion and a spiritually based life.
The best book I’ve read lately was (and tell us why)… Clive Cussler’s latest novel. This is pure escape, full of outdoor adventure.
The soundtrack to my life would include these songs: “Climb Every Mountain,” “Shower the People (You Love with Love),” “I Will Survive.”
I like living in Nevada County because … : Mother Nature here is so spectacular. Some of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been are in our backyard.
