Five candidates spar for Sierra College Board seats

Two of the seven Sierra College Board of Trustees’ seats are contested in the Nov. 2 election.

The Lincoln-based Area 1 seat, which will be vacated when Barbara Vineyard retires after this year, is a two-candidate race between Kelli Gnile and Howard Rudd.

The Auburn-Foresthill Area 5 chair is contested by Thomas Gardner, Cari Dawson Bartley and Gloria Plasencia. Incumbent Bill Martin plans to retire from the seat at the end of the year.



Although both races are for out-of-area seats, Nevada County residents vote in each.

Here is a brief introduction to the candidates:




Kelli Gnile

Education: AA Degree from Shoreline Community College, Seattle, Wash., and went on to study Business and Political Science at the University of Washington, Seattle.

Qualifications: Elected to and served on several different boards, including the Rocklin Unified School District, South Placer Municipal Utility District, Horizon Charter School Board and the Pleasant Grove School Site Council.

Occupation: Chief financial officer of a small high-tech firm.

Howard Rudd

Education: BA from the University of San Francisco, graduate certificate in Human Resource Management from San Francisco State University.

Qualifications: Sierra College Foundation board member, member of the Citizens Oversight Committee for the Sierra College Truckee campus construction bond measure, former president Placer County SPCA.

Occupation: Owner, Integral Financial Management.

Thomas Gardner

Education: Some college

Occupation: Sierra College student.

Qualifications: No political background.

Cari Dawson Bartley

Education: AA Science degree in Visual Media Technology from Spokane Falls Community College in Spokane, Wash.

Qualifications: Spent 30 years in the business world, including several years as the co-owner of a newspaper company. Currently employed with a publication content syndicate.

Occupation: Executive Editor/ Marketing Director, Cagle Cartoons.

Gloria E. Plasencia

Education: Not specified.

Occupation: Volunteer assemblywoman, California Senior Legislature.

Qualifications: Member of the Placer County Older Adults Advisory Committee and former administrative assistant to the Allied Health Division of Modesto Junior College.
