Fire victims identified

The victims of Friday’s early-morning fire in the 17000 block of Country Circle have been identified as resident Doris “Elaine” Hughes and her son, Sean Hughes.

No foul play is suspected, Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal said in a press release. Fire investigators from Nevada County Consolidated Fire District believe the origin of the fire was electrical in nature, but it cannot be determined.

At approximately 4 a.m., Doris Hughes called 911, reporting that her residence was on fire and that her adult son was trapped inside.

Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the call initially, but were unable to enter the home due to smoke and heat, Royal said, adding that it appears both victims succumbed to smoke inhalation.
