Fire on county line menaces dredge

A 150-acre fire just west of the Nevada-Yuba county line was contained early Wednesday morning after threatening an old gold dredge.

Battalion Chief Jim Stuller of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said the fire, which was reported just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, burned in the goldfields near Hammonton-Smartville Road.

Fire crews extinguished part of the blaze with the help of boats, which they used to row to the dredge before putting out the fire.

Crews from CDF’s Nevada City, Smartville, Higgins and Dobbins stations worked to contain the blaze with the help of a bulldozer, Stuller said. The blaze was contained by 5 a.m.
