Fire in Penn Valley quickly doused

Lauri Diel, of Penn Valley, spotted a small grass fire today “on the access road to Pleasant Valley School, off Pleasant Valley Road in Penn Valley while school was in session” and shot this picture of firefighters responding.

“The fire crews arrived quickly and got it out fast! Thank goodness for Calfire and the firemen at station 43!” Diel said.

The fire and response were noisy, but didn’t stop classes, Pleasant Valley School District Superintendent Debi Sandoval said.

She credited custodians Steve Tucker, who reported the fire this afternoon, and Steve Kuhlbaker and their quick response with fire extinguishers for nearly putting out the flames before firefighters arrived.

A person on a neighboring property also brought out a garden hose and offered a hose to the custodians, a witness said. Breezy conditions in Penn Valley blew the fire across the road and away from the school.

Rough and Ready and Penn Valley fire protection districts also responded.
