Fire doused near school

A small grass fire Thursday didn’t stop classes at nearby Pleasant Valley School, district Superintendent Debi Sandoval said. She credited custodians Steve Tucker and Steve Kuhlbaker, who used fire extinguishers to nearly put out the flames before firefighters arrived. A neighbor also brought out a garden hose, and breezes blew the fire across the road and away from the school. “Thank goodness for Calfire and the firemen at station 43,” area resident Lauri Diel said. Rough and Ready and Penn Valley fire protection districts also responded, a witness said.
